How to Survive the Holiday Splurge Without Sabotaging Your Diet

According to SkinnyChef.com founder Jennifer Iserloh, the average American consumes 3,500 calories on Thanksgiving Day, which is the equivalent of one pound of body fat. But don’t be alarmed. You can still indulge and enjoy your holiday meal. Believe it or not, the average Thanksgiving meal is already fairly healthy. It’s mainly about portion size and not overloading your plate. It’s also about having a healthy balance of food, activity and fun.

Here are a few simple steps you can take to stay healthy through the holiday season:

  • Don’t skip meals. Before leaving for a party, eat a light snack like raw vegetables or a piece of fruit to curb your appetite. You’ll be less tempted to over-indulge.
  • Check out the party buffet before filling your plate. Choose your favorite foods and make sure to include vegetables and fruits to keep your plate balanced.
  • Eat until you are satisfied – not overstuffed. Savor your meal and keep portions small.
  • Be careful with beverage choices. Alcohol can induce overeating and non-alcoholic beverages are often full of calories and sugar.
  • Bring your own healthy dish to a holiday gathering. Here are three recipes for healthy side dishes to share!
  • Plan time for exercise. A moderate, daily increase in exercise can help partially offset increased holiday eating. Try a 10- or 15-minute brisk walk twice a day.

By following these simple steps, you can still enjoy the holiday foods you love without worrying about sabotaging your diet and packing on the extra holiday weight!
