5 Ways to Say Yes to Chocolate on Valentine’s Day Without the Guilt

Valentine’s Day is a perfect reminder to cherish and be grateful for friends and family. And for me, it also makes me think about chocolate! But does healthy eating mean having to give up chocolate altogether? Absolutely not!

In fact, there are good reasons to include chocolate (particularly dark chocolate) as part of your healthy eating plan. Cocoa and chocolate contain plant compounds called flavenols that have antioxidant properties to help your body’s cells repair themselves. Research shows that there may be additional benefits to chocolate, such as lowering blood pressure and improving blood flow to your brain and heart.

The only bugaboo is that many chocolate treats come loaded with sugar, starch and/or fat that add the types of calories that will make you feel hungry later. So it pays to choose your chocolate wisely. Here are a few suggestions of more favorable chocolate choices for your diet:

  1. A small amount of plain dark chocolate, such as 7-8 chocolate chips or a dark chocolate kiss (only about 20 calories). Eat this after a meal to balance the sugar in the chocolate with the healthy nutrients in your meal.
  2. Chocolate dipped strawberries are the perfect Valentine’s Day treat. Simply melt some dark chocolate chips in the microwave, dip washed and dried strawberries in the chocolate, and place on wax paper to set.
  3. Dark chocolate protein bars. I have Zestar schedule a protein bar for my afternoon snack 3 or 4 days a week, which keeps me full until dinner and satisfies my craving for chocolate.
  4. Chocolate protein shake paired with an egg white omelet makes for an energy packed breakfast that will keep you going all morning long.
  5. Chocolate tea offers the health benefits of the antioxidants in both the tea and chocolate!

So as you celebrate Valentine’s Day with your loved ones, don’t feel guilty for indulging in a little bit of chocolate. Your sweet tooth will appreciate it.

Happy Valentine’s Day!
